Support for people without health insurance

organized by MediFonds e.V.

In Germany, health insurance is compulsory. Despite this, 1.2% of the population, or almost a million people, have no guaranteed access to the health system. The reasons for this are varied, and the government’s countermeasures are inadequate. Against this background, a network of „MediOffices“, „MediNets“ and medical refugee aid organizations has been established throughout Germany.

These are non-governmental, often voluntary organizations that provide medical care to people who do not have health insurance or adequate cover in the event of illness, or who do not have secure access to the health system for other reasons. In concrete terms, this means that people who live in Germany without health insurance for a variety of reasons are provided with medical treatment such as operations, births, aids such as orthoses or expensive medication, as well as specialized medical treatment. These medical treatments are often costly and cannot be covered by the people affected or by the local medical networks, medical offices, and medical refugee aid organizations alone.

These offices are largely dependent on donations for their work. With the support of the Care for Future Foundation, MediFonds e.V. will be able to continue its work in 2025 and continue to provide medical treatment to people without health insurance in the regular system.

MediFonds e.V. is a nationwide cooperation network of MediNets, MediOffices and medical refugee aid organizations. In addition to the professional exchange between volunteers throughout Germany, mutual financial support is a priority. To this end, MediNets, MediOffices and medical refugee aid organizations can submit an application to MediFonds e.V. for cost coverage. This allows the associations or initiatives to support each other quickly, even when money is tight, and ultimately achieve their actual goal – as long as the means allow: to provide urgent help to people without regular health care as long as government agencies do not do so.

In addition to the exchange, administration and organization, we at MediFonds e.V. also try to acquire donations in order to give the 39 MediNets, MediOffices and medical refugee aid organizations more room to maneuver. With the help of the financial support provided by the Care for Future Foundation, we can continue to pursue this goal and enable the financing of medical treatments.
